DPP Leaders’ Briefing 2024: Insights on AI, Cybersecurity, and Media Trends

Challenges, Innovations, and the Future of Newsroom Technology

The DPP Leaders’ Briefing 2024 (event page) brought together industry leaders to discuss critical topics like AI in media, cybersecurity challenges, and emerging media trends impacting newsroom technology. Held in London, the event explored how these innovations are reshaping the broadcast and media technology sector.  Representing AP Workflow Solutions, Paddy Payne, Anthony Prangley, and Esme Martin engaged with global broadcasters and technology providers to examine shared opportunities and hurdles. Our colleague Paul Shanley, Senior Director of Strategy, took to the stage for a News & Current Affairs Panel.

1.AI in Media: Challenges and Opportunities

While artificial intelligence (AI) holds significant promise for transforming newsroom operations, enterprise-level AI solutions face substantial barriers. As one attendee aptly described, the current state of AI maturity is comparable to “a 10-year-old child”—capable of impressive feats but lacking stability, security, and reliability for critical applications.

Case Study – RTE: AI is being used to track airtime during live broadcasts, ensuring non-partisan representation of politicians during election coverage. This innovation highlights AI’s potential to enhance journalistic integrity but also underscores the need for robust, reliable systems.

2. CapEx vs. OpEx: Diverging Priorities

The shift from capital expenditure (CapEx) to operational expenditure (OpEx) continues to divide broadcasters and suppliers. While suppliers advocate for the flexibility of OpEx models, many broadcasters, such as Mediaset, remain committed to CapEx. This tension reflects a broader need for tailored investment strategies that accommodate diverse operational goals.

3. Cybersecurity Challenges Facing the Media Industry

A key theme at the DPP Leaders’ Briefing 2024 was addressing cybersecurity challenges that media organizations face in a digital-first environment.  Broadcasters, including RTE and YLE, emphasized its importance, particularly as newsrooms increasingly operate on integrated, cloud-hosted systems. This focus is accompanied by a shift toward short-term contracts (no more than two years) and mandatory exit strategies to ensure flexibility and resilience.

4. Change Management: The Human Factor

One of the most prominent themes at the briefing was the difficulty of change management. Technology adoption often falters due to internal resistance rather than technical challenges. Mediaset and other attendees noted that addressing cultural shifts and providing robust support are essential for successful implementation of new workflows.

5. Audience Preferences and the Value of Authenticity

Broadcasters face a stark dichotomy: while they invest millions in infrastructure, younger audiences often favor content produced on smartphones. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram thrive on authenticity and immediacy, presenting a significant challenge for traditional media to balance high production standards with the demand for relatable storytelling.

6. Flexible Integration and Cloud-Driven Innovation

Participants expressed a strong preference for modular, cloud-based solutions. Broadcasters are increasingly seeking integrations that align with their existing infrastructures, opting for flexible, scalable systems over hardware-dependent models. Many broadcasters highlighted a preference for SaaS models with built-in exit strategies, underscoring the importance of adaptability in vendor relationships.
