In the dynamic landscape of digital journalism, staying ahead with the latest technologies isn’t just an advantage—it’s a necessity. The Associated Press, with its tradition of being at the forefront of news innovation, is spearheading efforts to foster the adoption of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) in local newsrooms.

Through the AP’s Local News AI Initiative funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, we have harnessed the prowess of AI to develop five groundbreaking projects in development, which will be available to newsrooms on an open-sourced basis.

On October 12th and October 26th, we invite you to join us in a two-part webinar series where we will delve into these projects, bringing forth the minds that envisioned and executed them. Aimee Rinehart and Ernest Kung, our experts in AI Strategy and Product Management respectively, will host the webinars, alongside the news leaders who pioneered these projects.

October 12th:

In the first webinar scheduled for October 12th, from Noon to 1 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, get a comprehensive overview of each project demonstrated by the newsroom’s leadership.

We’re excited to unveil five new AI projects that are in development but will be available for newsrooms on an open sourced basis, the first three of which will be available next week:

•    Automated Public Safety Incidents (Brainerd Dispatch, Minn.)
•    Spanish Translation of National Weather Service Alerts (El Vocero de Puerto Rico)
•    Automated Video Transcription & Summary (KSAT-TV, Texas)
•    Public Email Pitches Sorting (WFMZ-TV, Pa.)
•    “Minutes”: Meeting Transcripts with Keyword Alerts (WUOM-FM, Mich.)

October 26th:

The second webinar on October 26th, Noon to 1 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, is a haven for developers looking to implement these technologies. Engage directly with the technology teams in breakout rooms to understand the nuances of implementing these tools in your newsroom.

Why should you attend?

This is a unique opportunity to not only learn about AI and automation but to witness its practical application in newsrooms just like yours. Whether you are a journalist, a developer, or a newsroom manager, these webinars offer a rich insight into the next frontier of digital journalism.
